Remember that 85 mph Texas toll road? It's dying.

Texas 85 mph toll road unsustainable due to lack of use combined with poor planning.

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

Could this be an opportunity for speed tourism? With its gentle curves, the road was tested by engineers at triple digit speeds and Hennessy Performance did a 200 mph run:

Would you travel to Texas to drive as fast as you want on this toll road?

Yes I would. In fact, I already have done so. It’s called I-45 between Dallas and Houston, and if you’re doing 90, you’re going to have people passing you on the left AND the shoulder. True story.

I love that road took it a couple times when I lived in San Antonio, I wish it was unlimited. Ironically most people don’t even go over 85 on it; however, traffic was super light. I’d paid some decent money to max the M3 on it.

What this should mean is that the operator goes bankrupt, their investors get wiped out, and their construction debt gets written off. At that point the road no longer needs to pay for the cost of construction, just maintenance, which should be easier to handle.

Just looked up where it is. What is the point of taking that instead of 35? Tht highway looks ill advised just from google maps.

I-35 is gridlocked at all hours of every day. Problem is, 130 (that’s the toll road) is enough out of the way that unless 35 is completely stopped it’s only marginally faster - and obviously significantly more expensive.

It is the right road to take to COTA, so that’s a plus. Only not, since on race weekends the cops know you’re coming.

So all in all, yeah - not really worth it.

That’s what we’re all hoping!

And seriously, this isn’t really that big a deal. Most of the western states have 80 mph limits in truly uninhabited places (Utah, Nevada, Utah, Montana, Wyoming, Idaho). You can speed out there with significantly less risk, and significantly less cost if you do get caught.

As someone who lived in El Paso, Not-Really-Texas for a couple years I’m not sure I get the point of a toll road to go 85 in Texas. Then again I only did several trips to San Antonio and back so I’m probably missing something. I-10 is practically deserted once your’re slightly out of the city

Two words for that road: 1) Boon 2) Doggle. Austin has needed a proper bypass for years, but 130 swings so far east of town and is so much longer that it is rarely a shorter drive time. TxDOT has placed signs that show that it’s routinely at least 10 minutes more drive time on 130 than it is on I-35. And then there are the wild hogs . And I don’t mean Harleys. Bottom line, somebody got rich on that road, most likely some of Rick Perry’s cronies. Or Governor Hair himself. And the taxpayers got soaked. Again.

Taking I-35 is great if you enjoy spending hours sitting in traffic with thousands of your fellow motorists.

I-35 is most definitely not deserted. The problem is that the toll road is too far outside the city to make sense for Austinites, and comes in pretty far east of San Antonio as well. Given the speed Austin has been growing at, it may well end up making sense in the future, but right now it is comparatively too far east to relieve Austin’s crowded North/South routes.

Yup. I know people who live out near 130 and they still use 35 instead.

Yeah, not so much. The secured lenders will end up owning the road out of bankruptcy. They obviously still will want to get their return (or at least their initial loan proceeds back), so the tolls just won’t be for maintenance. The people who get wiped out in the bankruptcy process are all the unsecured lenders (trade creditors, etc.) and equity.

Those who aren’t used to driving I-45 best take heed of the numerous speedtraps, especially just south of Dallas. OTOH, there are stretches further south than that where it’s basically impossible for a cop to hide and you can stretch your legs a bit (not that I’d know anything about that).

If they really turned that into an unlimited speed road, I would definitely go down there at least a couple of times a month. Plus you can stop in Lockhart for great BBQ!

The Beltway 8 in Houston is quite crowded at peak traffic times.

I seriously can’t understand for the life of me why people still pay for the toll without at least first buying a tag...

It does go WAY out east. I use it to get to work but I usually drive the free roads home. I also use 130 if I’m trying to drive to Dallas but I’m leaving the ATX area during rush hour. When we came home from Dallas a week ago we skipped 130 and took 45 to Mopac and got home a lot faster than we would have on 130. Or at least, we would have if we hadn’t stopped at Bartlett’s for lunch.

Mmmm.... French Dip sandwich.

I do worry that one of these days they’ll start issuing speeding tickets for those who made it from one pass reader to the next in “faster than legal” time
